Simply Strings

COVID UPDATES

The Santa Rosa Symphony Institute for Music Education, with innovation and imagination, continues to seek ways to engage young people with the healing power of music and music making. More than ever before, the Institute is dedicated to its mission to provide quality music education throughout Sonoma County, a mission that is vital to the health and well-being of our community.

In a project called Simply Strings Integrated Roseland Program, the Institute is offering weekly, live, virtual music appreciation lessons during the school day. Three of the most experienced Simply Strings faculty create exciting content for all third graders in the Roseland School District – nine classrooms in all. In addition to learning about music in general, the children have received materials to make a paper violin to better understand how stringed instruments work.

Inspired by El Sistema, Venezuela’s acclaimed, social-action music network, Simply Strings develops musical excellence and promotes social engagement. Beginning in second grade, children in this program receive daily, intensive ensemble instruction two hours a day, five days a week after school. The program is based at Sheppard Accelerated Elementary School in the Roseland School District.

Through the Simply Strings program, I have noticed students build confidence, learn time management and self-discipline skills. They are encouraged to takes risks and most importantly, they feel a part of a positive, musically focused community. – Jenny Young, Principal, Sheppard Accelerated Elementary School

As of Fall 2020, Simply Strings is on hiatus while all Roseland Schools are engaged in distance learning. We will resume our in-person Simply Strings program when it is safe to do so. During this time, members of the Simply Strings faculty are providing a weekly half-hour music appreciation lesson to all third-grade students in Roseland Elementary Schools.
