Classes and Ensembles


Full Day WORKSHOPS ‚Äč

REGISTRATION BEGINS APRIL 1ST 2021

All full day packages include Choir, Rhythm and Fundamentals, and students choose an instrumental workshop from the following:

Kinder Violin
No prior music experience is necessary, continuing students are welcome. Classes introduce students to playing the violin in an age-appropriate group setting. Ages 5-6 only.
 
Violin and Viola
No prior music experience is necessary, for beginning, 0-3 years experience for continuing students. Classes introduce students to playing the violin or viola in a group setting. More experienced players develop new skills and hone the fundamentals. Ages 7 and up.
 
Cello and Bass
No prior music experience is necessary, for beginning, 0-3 years experience for continuing students. Classes teach students to play the cello in a group setting. More experienced players develop new skills and hone the fundamentals. Ages 7 and up.
 
Brass (including trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, etc.)
No prior music experience is necessary for beginning, 0-3 years experience for continuing. Classes introduce new students to playing trumpet or trombone in a group setting. More experienced players develop new skills and hone the fundamentals. Ages 7 and up
 
Woodwinds (including flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, etc.)
No prior music experience is necessary for beginning, 0-3 years experience for continuing. Classes introduce students to playing woodwinds in a group setting. More experienced players develop new skills and hone the fundamentals. Ages 7 and up
 
Guitar
No prior music experience is necessary for beginning, 0-3 years experience for continuing. Classes teach guitar technique, standard music notation and music theory in a group setting. Includes both ensemble and solo playing. Ages 7 and up.

 

Full Day Performance Academy (9am - 3pm)

REGISTRATION BEGINS APRIL 1ST 2021

Students focus on performance in an ensemble setting and deepen their musical understanding through composition, improvisation and conducting coursework, culminating in a Saturday, August 3rd performance. Students are placed in one of the following ensembles:

Prelude String Orchestra
Audition required. No prior ensemble experience required. Students must have played their instrument for at least one year. Students will master the basics of playing in an ensemble.
 
Intermezzo String Orchestra
Audition required. For intermediate students with at least two years ensemble experience. Students will learn to follow a conductor as they enhance their ensemble skills, improve their technique and develop their musicianship.
 
Chamber Ensembles 1, 2 & 3 (sign up for one, two or three weeks)
Audition required. For advanced students with at least four years ensemble experience. Classes will focus on technique and ensemble playing as students practice standard repertoire for chamber ensembles.

Musical Theater/Film Music/Video Game Music Ensemble (sign up for one, two or three weeks)
Audition required. For intermediate to advanced students, this class provides students with experience accompanying actors and dancers, as well as working with film scores. All instruments are welcome. Each week of camp focuses on a different topic.

Jazz Ensemble
Audition required. For intermediate to advanced students, this class is an exploration of different jazz styles, with a focus on improvisation technique and ensemble playing. There is a special need for musicians who play drum set, bass (electric or upright) and piano. Drum set and keyboard are provided by Santa Rosa Symphony.

  

Specialty Classes

REGISTRATION BEGINS APRIL 1ST 2021

Beginning and Advanced Composition
(Teacher recommendation form required with application) For intermediate to advanced students, this course is an opportunity for musicians to experience a practical approach to the fundamentals, orchestration, notation and musical analysis. Students interact in an open atmosphere of exploration and have the opportunity to create new musical works. Taught in conjunction with Beginning and Advanced Composing.

Beginning and Advanced Conducting
(Teacher recommendation form required with application) For intermediate and advanced students with at least four years ensemble experience or the equivalent. Students will develop conducting technique, their musicianship skills and begin to learn the process of score analysis. Taught in conjunction with Beginning and Advanced Composition.

Modern Composition Techniques/Improvisation
For intermediate to advanced musicians with any level of composing, songwriting or improvising experience. Students will learn improvisatory, aleatoric and conceptual composition techniques of the 20th century and beyond, and hone their improvisational and deep-listening skills. Students will have opportunities to experiment and take musical risks in a group ensemble setting, contribute to group compositions and gamified music. Taught in conjunction with Jazz Theory.

Jazz Theory
For intermediate to advanced musicians with any level of blues and jazz improvisation experience. Students will learn the theory fundamentals of blues and jazz improvisation, how to read a chord chart/changes. Taught in conjunction with Modern Composition Techniques/Improvisation.

Bass Intensive Workshop
(Teacher recommendation form may be required with application) For intermediate to advanced bass students who want an intensive “how to play better” experience. Sessions will explore chamber music for basses, mock auditions and in-depth solo work.
