Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Auditions are required for Performance Academy courses. Placement in all classes and ensembles is determined by experience, skill level and age, as well as musical balance and instrumentation for the ensemble, and may be changed at the discretion of the instructor. A $50 non-refundable payment is required with registration, which will be applied to tuition. If a student withdraws from Summer Music Academy and is eligible for a tuition refund, a $50 administrative fee will be retained from the refund. For more information, please contact Jane Shelly, Summer Music Academy Registrar, at (707) 546-7097 x 225.

auditions

Performance Academy ensembles require basic auditions for placement to make sure you have the best possible camp experience. Audition experiences vary between the ensembles as follows:

  • Prelude and Intermezzo String Orchestras: In-person auditions will be scheduled for the evenings of June 24th and 25th. If you are unable to audition on those dates, you can audition by video. Please prepare two scales of your choice, and a solo selection under 3 minutes of your choice.
  • Jazz Ensemble: Video auditions are to be submitted by June 25th, based on the Jazz Ensemble audition materials: Click here to download Jazz Ensemble Audition Materials
  • Film Music/Musical Theater/Video Game Music: A video audition is to be submitted by June 25th. Please prepare two scales of your choice, and a solo selection under 3 minutes of your choice.

We will contact you about scheduling any necessary auditions.

Although you audition for your first choice ensemble, all ensemble placements are determined by SMA faculty and staff.

For questions about auditions, contact Matt Payne, Youth Ensembles Manager, at (707) 546-7097 x 216.

Instruments

Musicians in all workshops and ensembles must provide their own instruments. Most percussion instruments are provided, but it is a good idea for percussion students to have their own set of instruments at home for practice. We recommend Stanroy Music and Loveland Violins in Santa Rosa as sources of rental instruments. Additionally, the Santa Rosa Symphony does have a very small library of instruments that may be available for loan. For assistance with instruments, please call Matt Payne (707) 546-7097 x 216.

Class Schedule, Concerts and Recitals

An open house takes place Friday, August 2nd during program hours. Some workshops and ensembles will have lunchtime performances during the open house schedule.
