About the Concert

Ernesto Lecuona’s Malagueña captures the fiery excitement and sultry allure of flamenco. Our endlessly inventive First Symphony Project Composer-in-Residence Gabriella Smith offers her eagerly awaited First SymphonyZuill Bailey returns with Grammy Award-winning Michael Daugherty’s Tales of Hemingway, a riveting work for cello and orchestra, which draws inspiration from several soulful works of the American writer. Ravel’s hypnotic fandango of seduction caps off this Spanish-infused celebration.
"Cello soloist Bailey [created] ethereal poignancy, purifying rapture and sustaining compelling intrigue." — The Boston Musical Intelligencer

This is the second season of the First Symphony Project. This four-year project with four world premieres by American composers is commissioned by the Santa Rose Symphony, the Eugene Symphony and nine patron households including Music Director Francesco Lecce-Chong.
