About the Concert

Weinberg’s bold Rhapsody on Moldavian Themes, a deeply personal political statement against Stalin, begins in dark lamentation and erupts in a defiant dance that celebrates the tenacity of Jewish life. Prokofiev’s blistering Second Piano Concerto explodes from the virtuosic fingertips of Alexander Toradze in a return appearance. Hector Berlioz’ revolutionary orchestral masterpiece Symphonie fantastique depicts an artist’s unraveling as his infatuation with the woman of his dreams leads from romantic fantasies to dark obsession.

"Toradze [negotiates] at seemingly impossible speeds, a work that Russian pianist Nicholas Rubinstein once deemed 'unplayable.'" — Baltimore Sun
