Santa Rosa Symphony Logo
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! I definitely have enjoyed a slower pace this summer, focusing more on planning and studying while getting to spend time exploring Sonoma County with Chloe (and Hibiki, my 9-month-old corgi). Even my outdoor adventures seem a bit like studying since one of the four major world premieres by the Santa Rosa Symphony this season is Valley of the Moon by Michael Daugherty, a work that will musically explore the biodiversity of our area. Michael came out to visit and find inspiration this past spring and it was great finally meeting a composer whose music I have been conducting since the beginning of my career! Michael is one of the most performed American composers today and part of that, at least for me, is his incredible ability to tell captivating stories and conjure up detailed landscapes in his music. I have no doubts this will be a truly spectacular premiere!

And, that's just one of them. A major new symphony, a Klezmer clarinet concerto, and a cantata for Mariachi and orchestra are also all coming to life for the first time right here with your Santa Rosa Symphony. I can think of no better way to come out of a devastating pandemic that has changed our world forever than with music of our time and for our time. So while I am enjoying my summer, I am also chomping at the bit, because I cannot wait to gather again and share another season of extraordinary musical experiences together!

Sincerely yours,

Summer Music Academy

Brings music instruction, joy to 98 students

The days at Summer Music Academy have been full of music-making. For new musicians, this involves learning how to hold their instrument, read notes and, in some cases, use a bow to create a sound. The more experienced musicians at camp are developing their technique and listening skills, working in small ensembles without a conductor. The students are also learning about music fundamentals and enjoying classes in rhythm and movement.
Every day the students (aged 7-17) are treated to a lunchtime concert with music presented by faculty and the students themselves. The concerts inspire the curiosity of the students by introducing them to a wide range of instruments and musical styles. They also have a chance to support each other from the audience when their friends perform.
Camp has been running Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Sonoma Country Day School since July 12. The last day is this Friday, July 30.

SRS hires Education Outreach Manager

Welcome Cheryl Lane!

We are happy to welcome our new Education Outreach Manager, Cheryl Lane. Cheryl has extensive experience working with schools, and comes to us with an excellent administrative background. She is excited “to be a part of a team that partners with local schools to cultivate an ongoing appreciation for music in our young people.” Cheryl lives in Windsor with her husband and two children. They have a daughter entering eighth grade and a son heading off to UCLA this fall. In her spare time, Cheryl enjoys hiking, running, floral arranging, and listening to classical guitar.

Youth Ensembles auditions open!
