SUMMARY:Road to Appalachia Featuring Mark & Maggie O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:About the Concert\n\n\n\nGRAMMY Award-winning violinists Mark O’Connor and Maggie O’Connor return to Santa Rosa with music that bridges concert hall tradition and the roots of American sound. Their works Song of the Liberty Bell and Strings & Threads Suite blend classical form with folk melodies and virtuosic fiddling\, creating a vibrant\, living expression of American music. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of the program is Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring\, a landmark of the American repertoire. Premiered in 1944 for Martha Graham\, the score captures a sense of optimism and renewal\, culminating in the beloved Shaker tune “Simple Gifts.” \n\n\n\nWoven throughout the concert are two striking works by Gabriela Lena Frank Elegía Andina and Escaramuza—which draw on Latin American influences to expand and enrich the idea of what “American” music can be. \n\n\n\nFrom Appalachian landscapes to Andean echoes\, this program traces a musical journey shaped by tradition\, migration\, and reinvention—an evolving portrait of a nation in sound. \n\n\n\nPre-Concert Talk with Francesco Lecce-Chong\n\n\n\nPre-concert talk is general seating and free to concert ticket holders. Robert\, a back yard mechanic\, kept PJ’s Italian sports cars running – takes an Italian to do that. As a thank you\, PJ gave Robert\, who was already interested in fine wine\, a winemaking kit – seemed a good gift for a chemist grad. Robert made his first wine in his garage in Berkeley in 1972. He entered it in the California State Fair and took home the Best of Show Award. Robert found his passion and continued making wine in his garage\, turned winery\, for his family and friends. \n\n\n\nTen years later\, PJ and Robert left their good jobs in the city to pursue their dream of owning a winery in the Sonoma Valley. In 1982\, they bought the Deerfield Ranch in Glen Ellen where they got married and turned the horse barn into their first winery. The Rexes still live there today\, however\, in 2000\, they bought 47 acres on Highway 12 in Kenwood to expand the winery operation. The Deerfield Ranch Winery is still family owned and operated producing about 20\,000 cases a year. \n\n\n\nOur wines are barrel aged in the 23\,000 sq. ft. cave\, also home to the tasting room open daily to the public. Winemaker Robert Rex was the pioneer of the cleanwine® movement and can often be seen at the winery. His philosophy is “Wine should be good and good for you.” Come taste the passion!Deerfield Ranch Winery is located at 10200 Sonoma Hwy Kenwood\, CA. Founded in 1896 by Giovanni Foppiano\, Foppiano Vineyards is one of Sonoma County’s oldest continually-operated\, family-owned wineries. Our family has supplied Northern California with wine for over a century\, surviving Prohibition in the 1920s by selling home winemaking kits. We believe that through the strength of the family and a commitment to quality\, our traditions can be maintained and thrive. We’re proud to be one of the founding members of the Russian River Valley AVA\, and continue to enjoy the fruits of our hardworking Italian heritage. To stay on the cutting edge of quality winemaking\, we’ve made important investments in infrastructure and winery equipment throughout the years. The vision of the fifth generation of Foppianos\, together with Giovanni’s foresight to purchase land in the Russian River Valley\, guides our family into the future while creating a world class wine program representative of our history. \n\n\n\nFoppiano Vineyards is located at 12707 Old Redwood Hwy Healdsburg CA.
