Karla Ekholm
Bassoon
Karla Ekholm has played bassoon with the Santa Rosa Symphony since 1996. She also plays principal bassoon with San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Opera Center, Pacific Chamber Orchestra and Vallejo Symphony, as well as playing second bassoon with Marin Symphony. For 39 years, Ekholm was on the faculty of Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C., where she taught aspiring young musicians. She started her studies at San Francisco State University with Walter Green and finished her undergraduate degree with him at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She holds a master’s degree in music from Temple University where she studied with Bernard Garfield. Ekholm is one of seven musicians featured in the documentary “Freeway Philharmonic,” which portrays the freelance life of Bay Area musicians.
Ekholm’s solo appearances include performing Michael Daugherty’s “Dead Elvis” with Vallejo Symphony, Jean Francaix’s “Divertissement” with Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra and San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and Paul Hindemith’s “Concerto for Woodwinds, Harp and Orchestra” with the Santa Rosa Symphony.
Ekholm lives in San Francisco where she fosters kittens and puppies for the SPCA.
