Ashley Faatoalia is a versatile and compelling tenor praised for his expressive range, beauty of tone, and commanding stage presence. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he studied vocal performance at Chapman University with Dr. Peter Atherton and has since performed on major stages across the U.S. and internationally. The LA Times calls him “Outstanding,” Opera News describes his singing as “hauntingly beautiful” with “a voice of winning purity and variety of expression,” and The San Francisco Chronicle praises his “sweet-toned” voice.
Highly sought after for new works and contemporary repertoire, Faatoalia has collaborated with leading composers including Anthony Davis, Christopher Cerrone, Jessie Montgomery, Rand Steiger, Lewis Pesacov, and Anne LeBaron. Recent and notable performances include: Remus in the world premiere of the new Treemonisha with Volcano; Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Oakland Symphony; roles with Los Angeles Opera including Simón (Las Tres Mujeres de Jerusalén), Emperor Altoum (Turandot), and Amadou in the West Coast premiere of Omar; Senator Frank Falmouth in the world premiere of The Grand Hotel Tartarus by Richard Danielpour; and Korey Wise in the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Central Park Five with Long Beach Opera.
Additional highlights include The Crab Man in Porgy & Bess with San Francisco Opera (for which he received critical acclaim), Marco Polo in the Emmy Award–winning Invisible Cities with The Industry, and appearances with Seattle Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and San Francisco Lyric Opera.
