Resident Orchestra at the Green Music Center

Free Concerts for Youth

Two Free Concerts for Youth dates will be offered as virtual field trips to schools. Sign up for the date and time of your choice on the reservation document here. The April 29 concerts will have the IGNITE portion in which students can sing along or play on recorder the song (Simple Gifts) accompanied by the orchestra. Jane Shelly is preparing video-taped recorder lessons along with a guide to help prepare the students. Contact her at to receive these free resources.

The Symphony presents six concerts per year (two by the SRS professional orchestra; four by SRS Youth Ensembles) at the Green Music Center's Weill Hall, serving 6,000 Sonoma County elementary students, teachers and chaperones. In addition to experiencing the grandeur of the concert hall, children are encouraged to view orchestral music as an integral aspect of artistic expression. This is often the child's first exposure to classical music. Many professional musicians credit attendance at a youth concert as the inspiration for pursuing a career in music.

Because of uncertainties arising from the ongoing COVID pandemic, creative alternatives to in-person concerts are being explored for this program. Schools and teachers are encouraged to sign up for the date and time of the concert they would ideally like to attend.

At the final two concerts (generally at the end of April or early May), there is an added component called IGNITE. For this portion of the concert, the audience members are invited to learn a specific piece to sing or play on recorder, which they get to perform from the audience while being accompanied by the orchestra on stage. For this period of distance learning, SRS staff are providing video recorder lessons for teachers and students who are interested in participating. Contact Wendy Cilman for more information.

Teachers receive lesson materials in advance of the concert. Feedback surveys are provided to teachers for Symphony measurement and evaluation purposes.

Following is a comment from a second grade teacher after a Free Concerts for Youth performance:
"Most of my students have never been exposed to all the instruments and sounds of a symphony. We spent some time learning about the instrument families and tied the theme into one of our language arts stories. This made the field trip experience very meaningful...Learning music is a reward in our class and your program provided inspiration and motivation."
