Good Times Over a Ground (Bass): YPCO

A good groove is the floor of a danceable or funky song, and has been so since at least the 17th century.  Young People’s Chamber Orchestra (YPCO) performs “ground basses” — a turn with a repeated bass line, such as a Chaconne or a Passacaglia —going as far back as Henry Purcell in Restoration era England, with a stop at the Bach household, and all the way to Chic’s 1977 genre shattering groove, “Good Times,” which helped to usher in the popularity of rap and hip-hop.  After that, we’ll explore bells and Eastern European Minimalism, with works by Mozart as well as living composers Arvo Pärt and his follower Peteris Vasks.

About Young People’s Chamber Orchestra

Currently under the direction of Aaron Westman, the Young People’s Chamber Orchestra (YPCO) is a string orchestra working without a conductor. Is designed to take accomplished young string players and mold them into high-functioning musicians with a complete attentiveness to detail and to each other within the context of the music. The director trains the musicians to interact and collaborate on high-level music-making and nuanced performance.
